The door to the left banged open, metal scraping against steel, and Elena turned her head quickly to watch from between strands of hair as two people spilled out into the little area outside the building. She stayed silent, freezing up, when it became apparent they were angry and loud, something she shouldn’t be seeing. The light from the streetlamps turned the woman’s hair a brassy gold and the man’s dark eyes seemed fiercely lit from something other than artificial means. She watched them speak from the corner of her eyes. The embers from the end of her cigarette dropped, falling onto her heels.
“You could be more attentive, Rebekah.”
“I could?” The woman tossed her head, her heavy curls falling down against a black dress that was certainly nicer and more expensive than Elena’s own; something she could tell even in the dark. “You want me to pretend to be like you? Play nice and suck up to more than half the people in there that only ever pretended to like us out of fear? No thanks.”
“I’ll pass,” her words were sharp in contrast to the man’s heavy brow and frown.
Of course at that moment her lungs and throat decided to protest, and Elena found herself unable to stifle the coughs that forced their way out of her. She quickly tried to cover her mouth, but it was to no aid.
The two turned to look at her, the blonde eyeing her for a moment before disappearing back inside. The man held her contrite apologetic gaze for a few moments, near-black eyes glaring at her, that heavy frown deepening and tightening into something more thunderous. She nearly stepped back from his expression and it was the coughing fit that kept her from doing so.
I’m nearly done with the opening part of the mob au for my heroine bigbang.
pleased to be working on this again.
